    The Skinny on Sports

I’m very excited to announce that Matt and I are working on a new project called The Skinny on Sports. It’s a 10 minute audio show or Podcast about the latest issues and stories in the sports world. Our first show is now posted at http://www.andyskinn.com/skinny. Podcasting is the term given to these shows because using a program like iPodder these shows can be downloaded automatically when new shows become available, and you can even have them automatically transferred to your iPod.

Our first show looks at the fight from the NBA the other night, Vince Carter and the trade rumors, Maria Sharapova, and Tiger Woods. Plus, in the overtime segment, Matt reviews his picks for the five biggest idiots to ever play basketball.

We would love feedback from everyone and hopefully you’ll all enjoy the show! Pass on the word to any sports fans you know.

UPDATE: The second episode of the show is now posted – check it out!

    dinosbasketball.com

I’ve been working on a website lately for the University of Calgary Dinos Men’s Basketball team. For those of you who don’t know, my brother Matt is an assistant coach with the Dinos this year as he is starting his Masters degree in Sports Psychology. The site isn’t completely finished yet, but the main design is there (probably still some work on the header after Matt gives me some action shots). The Dinos lost in the semi-finals at the Canadian championships last year, therefore, they are hoping for a big year again this time around. You can follow their progress by heading over to dinosbasketball.com.

    Anyone else find this shocking?

I came across this article on ESPN.com today. It discusses the graduation rates for the Division I schools in the United States and compares athletes to the students at large. I don’t know what shocks me more: the fact that at a 62 percent graduation rate for athletes that’s 2 percent higher than for students at large (both seem low to me) or the fact that near the end of the article, they start comparing “black” and “white” athletes. Even though I’m shocked that in this day and age they still make this comparison, perhaps with better terminology/writing it wouldn’t have caught me off-guard as much as it did.

American schools do a lot of racial comparisons, and initiatives. In some schools, minority populations are brought in for early orientation to help integrate them to the school. Some residences are actually sorted by ethnicity….

    Snow at Sunshine!

I know it’s only mid-October, but it’s getting colder here in Calgary and with all the rain in the city today, that meant snow in the mountains! (the picture is from the Mountain Cam at Sunshine. Since I’m such a fan of skiing, I’m of the opinion that once it starts getting cold outside, it should just go all the way and get cold enough to snow so that the ski season will start sooner. Judging by the picture, it looks like the snow has started. I haven’t heard the projected opening date for Sunshine yet, but Lake Louise says they will be open early November. Bring on the snow!

    Olympics and Drug Testing

With the Olympics set to begin, I just remembered an article I read on TSN the other day. It warns athletes of the new drug tests that have previously only been under review. With all the talk in recent weeks about athletes testing positive for drugs, could these new tests lead to the most drug-filled Olympics in history? It will be interesting to see how everything unfolds.

    Tour de Lance!

I don’t usually follow cycling throughout the year, but the past few years I’ve become amazed with the Tour de France. I can’t beleive how well conditioned Lance Armstrong is and how he continues to dominate the sport. I watched the 16th stage last night and couldn’t beleive how he dominated the time trial up the mountain. Performances like that solidify that although he arguably has the best team in the race, he is still able to build on his lead by winning individual stages. It looks like he should go on to win his 6th consecutive Tour de France with only 4 more stages to go and a commanding lead – simply amazing!

I also recently read a really good article in Wired that describes everything his team/sponsors do to make his equipment the most technically advanced in the world. It’s a really interesting read.
