    Podcasting… what’s it all about?!?!

I know I’ve been mentioning podcasting on this site a lot lately since Matt and I started The Skinny on Sports, but I don’t think I’ve really talked about podcasting and what I think it means in terms of the future of internet content.

Podcasting may not seem like anything new to a lot of people. Afterall, people have been downloading audio files for years now – so why is podcasting so special? The reason that I thought I should talk about this is because podcasting brings together a few things that I’ve been mentioning on the site, but never all together in one post.

I’ve mentioned Bloglines in the past as a way to keep track of all your favorite websites that have RSS feeds. For example, I have over 50 different sites that I keep track of using Bloglines. Instead of having to check all 50 websites everyday to see if there is anything new, I simply check Bloglines and it gives me all the latest stories from all the sites. Huge time saver! The term Podcasting and its idea is built on this technology. Now, instead of just the story content included in the RSS feed, an enclosure is also included that contains the MP3 file. Now, using a program called iPodder or others (that’s just the one that I use), I can check different podcasts with the press of a single button. It simply scans the RSS feeds for those other shows and automatically downloads any new MP3 files in the enclosures. I can even set this to download and transfer the tracks to my iPod in the middle of the night so that I don’t have to wait for the content to download in the morning. I just pick up my iPod each morning before work and have fresh shows to listen to on my way. This level of automation is what makes podcasting unique. You don’t need to go to each site and download the audio files that you want each day – it just does it for you!

Like Bloglines, my iPodder is now getting filled with various RSS feeds. I think everyone in the podcasting world listens to Adam Curry’s Daily Source Code since he is at the leading edge of what is going on with podcasting. After that, the nice thing is that everyone is different and you can choose from the thousands of podcasts that now exist. It doesn’t matter what shows are coming on the radio in your area, you can listen to any podcast anytime you want. If you check out The Skinny on Sports website you’ll see a list in the left column of many of the other Podcasts that I listen to. It’s nice since I’ve actually had email conversations with most of the other Podcasters in that list and many of them have helped us get our start. For example, Dave Slusher encouraged us to even start a sports show, and Ben from UpTheTree.com was kind enough to offer the podcasting logo with the whistle around it’s neck for our show. Others have helped out with interviews on the show – Dawn and Drew and Endurance Radio – and ideas for how to help the show keep growing.

The best way to find out about new podcasts is to look at iPodder.org which contains a directory of podcasts as well as the front page which is updated regularly with all the new shows. PodcastAlley.com is another great place to start since people can vote on their favorite shows and leave comments as well. There is also a forum there for discussion about other podcasts or for ideas/help on starting your own show. Podcasting has only been around since October 2004 so there is still plenty of time to get going on your own show. It lets everyone have the chance to let their voice be heard without the need for expensive studios and recording equipment.

If you haven’t listened to any podcasts yet, give it a try. There is bound to be something that you like. The other important thing is to give each show a fair chance. Not every episode of a show is necessarily the same as their “usual” content. Even if you listen to a show and wonder what it is actually about, give it a few days and you’ll be waiting for the next show to come out just to hear what the person will say next. (That’s referring to you Dave Slusher!)

Spread the word! Podcasting is here to stay so get listening and recording!

I started Podcasting about a year ago and it is more exciting than blogging. I love podcasting maybe because i love music so much and radio programs when i was still a kid.

Google and Friends take on Comment Spam

Just as I’ve been doing even more reading trying to figure out how to control comment spam on my website and others, Google announces this. Essentially, Google, along with the help of many of the leading blogging companies, have come to an agreement that there will be a way to post links on a website (or in the comment section) without ‘giving credit’ to the link that is posted. This will discourage spammers from posting in comments and other public places since what they have been trying to do is increase the number of links to their site so that they will rank higher in Google’s search. (Hope I’m writing clearly enough and that makes sense.) Hopefully this announcement will mean that spammers will have less motivation to do so and the rise that everyone has seen in comment spam will come to a hault. On top of that though, it’s great to see so many companies coming together to try and put an end to comment spam instead of each company trying to develop their own unique way of dealing with it. Go team!

Great stuff Andy. I for one can benefit from less comment spam :)

For all the iPod and iTunes doubters out there…

    From iPodlounge:
During his keynote presentation at today’s Macworld Conference & Expo, Apple CEO Steve Jobs revealed that more than 4.5 million iPods were sold in the December quarter–500 percent growth year over year. Jobs said the total number of iPods sold to date now stands at over 10 million units, with 8.2 million of those being sold in 2004. He said the 10 millionth iPod was sold on December 16, 2004.

Jobs also said that more than 230 million songs have been purchased from the iTunes Music Store worldwide since it was launched in April 2003. He said that Apple is now selling approximately 1.25 million songs a day and that the company is on pace to sell nearly half a billion songs a year. Jobs also noted that over 1 million pre-paid iTunes cards have now been sold.

    Mac mini and iPod shuffle

There were rumors for the past couple of weeks that Apple would be announcing a new Mac today that would be “headless” (sold without a monitor) and would be the first truly affordable Mac. So, while I was expecting something new, I was not expecting this! What you see in the image on the left is the new Mac mini. It is only 6.5 inches wide and 2″ tall – and it’s a complete desktop computer. You just hook up your own keyboard, mouse and monitor and you’ll be enjoying the wonderful world of Mac OS X. To top it all off, it starts at $629 Canadian (or $599 with the educational discount) which should be affordable enough for many PC users to finally convert over to Mac.

It was very hard for me to keep my credit card in my pocket today when I saw this – I don’t know how long I can last though. I’ve wanted a Mac for a long time now, and this might finally be the one!

In other Apple news today, they released a new flash based iPod called the iPod shuffle. It comes in 512 MB or 1 GB models. The interesting thing about this player is that there is no screen on it and the slogan is “Life is Random”. While I was unsure about the idea at first, I’m sure Apple will sell a ton of these. It will be random like listening to the radio, but no ads and it’s only music you like – sounds good to me!

UPDATE: Apparently, the Apple Store that is only 3 blocks away from the Expo where these announcements were made started the day with 2000 iPod shuffle units – they were sold out by noon!

    More About Comment Spam…

It seems as though I’m still getting spammed so I’ve decided to try out a different plugin for the spam detection. As a result, I’m hoping that legitimate comments will still get through. The way this one is supposed to work, is that you’ll only have to fill in the extra lines by looking at a picture with text in it if the plugin thinks that your comment is a spam. So, to most of you, you won’t see any difference at all. If you are having problems posting comments however, please email me to let me know.

    Happy New Year!

I’m not sure why, but it looks like at least one of my posts was deleted. It may have been my fault as I’ve been testing out a new plugin for the comments. A friend of mine was attacked by spam in his comments lately by a spam robot, so I fixed up his site (and mine) with a plugin that requires the user to enter a code in the box before the comment can be processed. It’s one extra step for you to submit a comment, but well worth it to avoid the spam!

Hope everyone had a good holiday! As always, check out the podcast over at The Skinny on Sports. Happy New Year!
